  1. All values are reported as (OR and 95% CIs) and were derived from a logistic regression model after adjustment for age, physical activity (METs min/day) and wealth score index
  2. Additional adjustments:
  3. Smoking (Yes/No), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) (gr/1000 kcal), sodium and potassium (mg/1000 kcal), diabetes mellitus (Yes/No) and dyslipidemia (Yes/No) for hypertension and metabolic syndrome models
  4. Smoking, MUFAs, PUFAs, SFAs and diabetes mellitus for increased TG and reduced HDL-c models
  5. Smoking and dyslipidemia for elevated blood glucose model
  6. The significance level was considered P < 0.05
  7. TG triglycerides, HDL-c high-density lipoprotein
  8. *P-value < 0.05, derived from a multivariate logistic regression model
  9. †P for trend derived from multivariate logistic regression model using the median protein intake per body weight (gr/kg) for each quintile as the continuous variable
