Schematic of the effects of leptin and leptin deficiency on growth plate cartilage of the tibia. Adipocyte-derived leptin regulates chondrocyte proliferation and arrangement in the growth plate. Lean mice demonstrate normal cartilage tissue microstructure while chondrocytes of leptin-deficient ob/ob mice have fewer columns of chondrocytes, with cells that are reduced in volume and have a more disorganized arrangement
